John Bacon

Biography

One of British Columbia’s emerging lyric tenors, Mr. Bacon is in demand as a concert and recital soloist. Having completed his studies at the University of British Columbia and the Vancouver Academy of Music, he is now heading to England. Mr. Bacon will be attending the Guildhall School of Music and Drama beginning September 2005 where he will study with Rudolf Piernay. Recently, Mr. Bacon’s solo career has included the role of Tito in Mozart’s La Clemenza di Tito at the Orford Festival in Québec, and Mozart’s Requiem and Dvorak’s Stabat Mater in Vancouver. He also recorded a recital this past spring for CBC Radio Two as one of last year’s winners of the Debut Series for Young Performers. Within BC, he has appeared with Victoria’s Capriccio Vocal Ensemble, Imant Raminsh and the Aura Chamber Choir, the Abbotsford Symphony, and the Burnaby Symphony.

In the summer of 2003, Mr. Bacon travelled to Casalmaggiore, Italy, participating in its International Music Festival, and he has also attended the Britten-Pears School for Advanced Musical Studies in Aldeburgh, England where he studied with the eminent English tenor, Anthony Rolfe Johnson.  Mr. Bacon has also recorded the role of Carl Jung opposite Canadian mezzo-soprano Judith Forst in the first act of Canadian composer Lloyd Burritt’s opera Pilgrim. Other operatic roles include: Eisenstein in Die Fledermaus, Sam in Street Scene by Kurt Weill, King Kaspar in Amahl and the Night Visitors by Carlo Menotti, and Spalanzani and Franz in The Tales of Hoffmann. Mr. Bacon’s future engagements include the Evangelist in Bach’s St. John Passion and being one of ten peformers in a series of concerts presenting the complete works of Gabriel Fauré hosted by Graham Johnson in London, England.
